Canada's strategy for the Indo-Pacific: New commitment or old commitments in a new package

The Canadian government announced its new foreign policy for the Indo-Pacific (Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy) on the 27th of November 2002. A new policy for the Indo-Pacific intended to “advance and defend Canada’s interests by supporting a more secure, prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable region while protecting Canada’s national and economic security at home and abroad”.  The policy is based on five strategic focus: 

  • promoting peace, resilience and security 
  • expanding trade investment and supply-chain resilience 
  • investing in connecting people 
  • building a suitable and green future  
  • ensuring Canada remains an active and engaged partner to the Indo-Pacific
